Rodney Stark (* 1934) ist ein US-amerikanischer Religionssoziologe. Er wuchs in Jamestown, Norddakota, in einer lutherischen Familie auf. Er leistete Wehrdienst in der US-Armee und arbeitete als Journalist, bevor er ein Studium an der University of California, Berkeley, begann. Nachdem er 32 Jahre lang an der University of Washington unterrichtet hatte, wechselte er 2004 zur Baylor University, wo er Kodirektor des Instituts für Religionsstudien wurde. Stark ist ein Verfechter der Theorie der rationalen Entscheidung in der Religionssoziologie, die er die „Theorie der religiösen Wirtschaft“ nennt.

Stark hat nach eigenen Angaben 28 Bücher und 144 Artikel veröffentlicht, die z. T. in 13 weitere Sprachen übersetzt wurden.[1] Auf Deutsch erschien sein Buch „Gottes Krieger – Die Kreuzzüge in neuem Licht“, in dem er der heute verbreiteten Auffassung widerspricht, wonach die Kreuzzüge geführt worden seien, um Land zu erobern, Mohammedaner, Juden und (andere) Heiden unter Zwang zu bekehren und sich zu bereichern.
