Doctor Jimmy

Doctor Jimmy ist ein Lied der englischen Rockgruppe The Who, welches 1973 auf dem Album Quadrophenia erschien. Komponiert wurde es, wie sämtliche Lieder des Albums, von Pete Townshend, dem Hauptkomponisten und Gitarristen der Gruppe.

Das Lied beschreibt die explosive Stimmung des Hauptcharakters von „Quadrophenia“, Jimmy, der an einen derartig verzweifelten Punkt angelangt ist, daß er beginnt, massiv Alkohol zu konsumieren und in jeder Art selbstzerstörerisch, bis an die Grenze der Verrücktheit, zu denken und zu handeln. Der Kehrreim „Doctor Jimmy and Mr. Jim“ (in Anlehnung an den Romantitel „Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde“) ist dabei eine Anspielung auf seine gespaltene Persönlichkeit. In dieser verzweifelten Stimmung beginnt Jimmy, über sich selbst nachzudenken. Die Textstelle „What is it, I’ll take it“ („was auch immer kommt, ich nehme es“) bezieht sich nach Aussage von Townshend auch auf den Charakter des Schlagzeugers von The Who, Keith Moon.
