Ehrlich, Paul R.

Paul Ralph Ehrlich ( 29. Mai 1932 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) ist ein Jude, der in den USA als Hochschullehrer für Biologie eine Anstellung an der Stanford-Universität hatte. Er schreibt zum Themenbereich Überbevölkerung.

Leben

Herkunft

Paul Ralph Ehrlich wurde am 29. Mai 1932 als Sohn des Geschäftsmanns William Ehrlich in Philadelphia, US-Bundesstaat Pennsylvanien, geboren. Seine Mutter war Ruth Rosenberg, und mütterlicherseits stammt er von Juden ab, die in den 1840er Jahren aus Deutschland in die USA ausgewandert waren.

Ausbildung

Er studierte an der Pennsylvania University (A.B. 1953) und an der University of Kansas (A.M. 1955; Ph.D. 1957). Von 1957 bis 1958 wirkte er als Forschungsassistent an der Chicago Academy of Sciences, anschließend bis 1959 an der Kansas University. Danach wechselte er als Assistenzprofessor an die Stanford University. Von 1962 bis 1966 war er dort a.o. Professor, danach war er dort ordentlicher Professor für Biologie. Außerdem leitete er von 1966 bis 1969 und wieder von 1974 bis 1976 das dortige Seminar für biologische Wissenschaften. Neben seinem Lehrauftrag für Biologie hatte er seit 1976 noch eine besondere Professur für Bevölkerungsforschung.

Wirken

Ehrlich warnt seit langer Zeit eindringlich vor den Gefahren der Bevölkerungsexplosion. Insbesondere sein Buch „Die Bevölkerungsbombe“ (1968; The Population Bomb) erregte Aufsehen. Die Probleme der wachsenden Menschenflut, besonders in der Dritten Welt, sprach u. a. der SPIEGEL (39/81) in dem Artikel „Hört auf, wir sind schon zu viele“ an. Danach wird erst in etwa 130 Jahren eine Stabilisierung der Weltbevölkerung bei 10,5 Milliarden (90 % davon in der Dritten Welt) erwartet. Dazu Ehrlich: „Nur Narren glauben, daß der Planet so viele Menschen tragen kann.“
